Default atlantis: a question for the devs, and a poll for the players

i remember reading on gateworld a while back, i think when alliance was being made, that the stargate people had provided to the game designers the real 3d model of atlantis. so my question for the devs is this: do you have the real 3d model of atlantis?

you probably think i expect to run free in atlantis, but i don't. an atlantis map would only need to include the gateroom and surounding corridors, the control room, the outside balcony and the jumper bay. but of course, when i go out on the balcony, being able to see the city below is a big part of the satisfaction of having an atlantis map. thats where the model would come in, because i'm sure it would take forever to recreate the city below, and pointless since the only purpose would be to look at it from above.

but this brings up another point. why have the city below, or even the balcony if you can't see over the handrail? that's my main complaint about the sgc map. i've said before that i don't mind the corridors being egg shaped instead of round, and i don't really mind that ridiculous fuel storage room, much. but the problem i do have is that the best view in the house is totally destroyed by the scale. in stargate, when general hammond or any grown person is standing in the control room a few feet back from the controls, they can see the stargate and most of the ramp. but in the control room in sgr, the control area is so big that you can't see over it. you can barely see the stargate. if atlantis is all blown out of proportion like the sgc is, you won't be able to see over the handrail to take in the best veiw in the city. same thing with being able to see over the consoles in the atlantis control room to see the gateroom.

so that's the poll. would you, the players, rather have an accurate atlantis, or an atlantis optomized for shooter play (ridicularge)?

i'm sure the devs must realize by now that this game is not going to be popular with random shooter fans. but it can be very popular with stargate fans. so why not cater to the fans and give us what we want, and make the game be all that it can be, with accurate, cannon locations? it puzzles me that the first new map is going to be just another random stargate-ish map and not an actual location from stargate??? don't get me wrong, the pics of the new map look great, but it's not going to bring in any new players. on the other hand, maps like atlantis, a ha'tak, a 304, chulak, tollana, dakara, abydos, alpha site, etc... will bring in new players. i've gotten the same reaction from most of my stargating friends that i've shown the game to. they say, i doubt i woud play the temple or whiteout, so why would i buy a game for one map, especially when that one map isn't even accurate? i tell them, to support stargate worlds, although i do withold my suspicion that the game isn't even supporting itself, let alone stargate worlds...

sorry for the long post. feel free to take out your anger on me in-game, if you can... (most of you can...)

I voted shooter. Only because, some of the collision issues with a true atlantis may be a mare to sort out for the devs. If we were talking MMO, then I would have gone with accurate.

^ Agreed, and same vote. This is a shooter. Make it a shooter map. Duh?

Well I voted for Optimized shooter, only because this a shooter game and we as the gamers do not want this to be looking like SGW. I agree with you about more actual stargate locations seen in the series would bring in more fan base and make game play more enjoyable and I am also irritated about the alterations in the SGC, the control room thing I would like to see an alteration too, as well as a possible extension of that level to bring to light some of the areas that were actually seen in the series and movies. When they do come out with Atlantis for SGW they will definatly have more than the control room, jumper bay, stargate room, as it will be a whole add on, that is if SGW ever gets finished.

When we first did the SGC for SGR, we actually created an accurate model of the entire set (with the conference room level more fleshed out). But, the battle was all hallways and small rooms, and less exciting. The tank room seemed a logical thing that might be there, considering this space was a missile silo adapted to be the SGC, and it gave us a large space with catwalks to fight in, alongside the hallways.

Atlantis would need to have some of the single person wide spaces opened a bit, but the Gaterium and main hallways are large, already, and good space. We'd likely make the stairs up to code. The actual stairs on the set are too short, and dangerous to walk on (only as deep as half my foot). But the goal will be to preserve the look, feel and layout as seen in the show, as well as the view from the balcony, etc.

^ this is a good sign. I like this. This makes me happy.

Oh yea, i vote optimized shooter. I'd be happy to play in Atlantis nonetheless cuz it's Atlantis, and Atlantis = epic.

Gaterium is put in bold for being a purely epic word to describe Atlantis's gate room.

Also the size of the gateroom in Atlantis and the area around it plus the walk ways seem almost perfect for a shooter. Now tell the developers to create an Atlantis map .

Great to here!

I would prob vote as accurate as possible, to draw in more fans/players.

Atlantis seems spacious enough as is. Those teleporters would be **** fun for sneak attacks

but thats what battle in the sgc is. all of the firefights we've seen in the sgc have taken place in the corridors and gateroom. my favorite battles in the sgr sgc are in either the gateroom, the control room, the corridor between the gateroom and control room, or by the self destruct device.
of course there are a few larger spaces in the real sgc like the malp room, the supply room (seen in lost city), the room where the foothold aliens had the mimic machine, the mess hall, etc... the supply room certainly could have been modified a bit to include some catwalks.
the sgc is by nature a confined space.
it just doesn't feel like the sgc when i'm battling in the fuel storage room. it'd be like having a tennis court in a submarine.

this sort of makes sense, however i don't think it was an actual launch facility. in 1969, an airman kind of laughed at sg1's fear of the test burn, asking if they really thought they were going to ignite a rocket undergound. there is no clear path to the surface, the top of the shaft opens to the interior dome of norad at ground level, still hundreds of feet through solid rock to the open air.

i can't think of any spaces like this in atlantis. even the transporters are big enough for 2 or 3 people. the narrowest space i can think of is the bridge from the control room to weir's office, but it's still big enough for a dozen or more people.

i'm not sure the ancients had building codes, and really, i'm not too worried about my virtual likeness falling on the stairs and fracturing his kneecap.

It would be great if it could happen again, Jim has already walked those sets and the footage he and his team brought back are what we based our designs from. I unfortunatly was not one of those who went. I am hoping I get to next time it happens.

i've been a bit worried that the set doesn't exist anymore, given the auctions that have been going on. they've been selling lots of stuff from atlantis, stained glass sections, light fixtures, dhd buttons, etc...
