Default Lower Resolutions

in games its no secret that resolution affects performance. for example, one of my fave games fallout 3 will run much better on my pc at 800X600 then 1280X740 or whatever it usually is. usually about a 15-20 fps difference (or moving from medium to high graphics settings and maintain the framerate)

i also noticed that the lowest resolution in sgr is 1280X740 (or whatever it is i know im a bit off)

so what if firesky were to implement lower resolutions such as 800X600 or if you wanted to go back 4 years 640X480. it would only affect the player who is using the specific computer and it would depend on what said individual was willing to compromise to runn at higher framerates or graphical settings.

so what do you guys think? am i on to something? lol

As far as I am aware, there is a configuration file (.ini) that will allow you to change the resolution to whatever you wish including 640x480.

It would be handy to have these in game however, I agree.

go into the ini files and change it there

resx=?
resy=?

I think they are the values.
and it should overide any ingame settings.

Does this actually work, can we get some proof of someone doing it.
If so does it actually increase performance Lag wise setting it to 800x600 or has that got nothing to do with it!?

at lower res settings it windows will shift the load off the gpu and put it on your CPU. So if you have a good video card you going to make your performance worse in most cases.

in theory it will make it easier for your pc to run it, so it depends on if your talking framerate or lag based on location from servers.

But yes in every game i have ever played, lowering the resolution will increase your fps. (how much ultimately depends on your pc but on average probably 10-15 fps. increase)

I can play this game on max settings just fine at about 40-60fps, I was just wondering if reducing res would reduce the ping!?

I know sod all about this sorta stuff, but I'm guessing it won't!

nope sorry dude, ping has to do with server location, internet speed, conection, ect... shutting down all background programs that use the internet might help a bit though.

AFAICR the lowest rez setting is 1024 x 768...I can ask programming to add 800 x 600 support...
